Short Description: The lecture explores the intersections between migration, urban space, and the
reception system in Cyprus through the lens of critical urban research. Drawing on
ongoing postdoctoral research, it investigates how legal frameworks, physical
infrastructures, and everyday experiences shape the asylum process, revealing
systemic gaps and acts of agency. Through a grounded, situated approach, the
presentation reflects on the socio-spatial dynamics of borders, and highlights the
tensions between policy, space, and lived realities on the island.
Short Bio: Ana Ricchiardi is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral researcher at the University of
Cyprus, part of the YUFE4Postdocs program. Trained in architecture and urban studies,
she holds a PhD from Politecnico di Torino and has taught and conducted research in
Cyprus, Italy and Ecuador. Her current project, MAKING SPACE, examines the physical
and social infrastructures of migrant reception in Cyprus. Her work explores the
intersections of migration, urban space, and socio-spatial justice.
