8th My First Conference

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the 8th edition of My First Conference, which will be held at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka on 19 September 2024. The event is jointly organised by the Faculty of Maritime Studies, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Rijeka.

The conference is intended for all doctoral students and offers an opportunity to present their research activities and findings to their peers and other students. In addition to the presentations, one of the goals of the conference is to encourage networking and the creation of new connections among individuals from similar or related professional and research fields.

A suitable submission is an abstract or a paper in the thematic field of technical sciences. There is no registration fee for the conference, and the official language is English. The deadline for registration and one-page abstract submission is 1 July 2024. International Conference on Highly Flexible Slender Structures

International Conference on Highly Flexible Slender Structures will be held from 25 to 29 September 2023 at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka. The conference is organised as a thematic conference of the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) and as a Special Interest Conference of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM).


Applied Landslide Research for the Development of Risk Mitigation and Prevention Measures

My First Conference

The call for My First Conference has been published. This year, the conference will take place for the seventh consecutive time on 14 September at the Faculty of Engineering in Rijeka, co-organised by the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka.

Over the years, the conference has brought together doctoral students in technical fields, providing a positive experience in presenting current research among peers. It promotes networking, collaboration, and the development of various competencies and transferable skills.

Final-year students of lower-level study programmes are also invited to submit their work.

“Let’s Learn to Communicate Science Successfully”

The Doctoral School of the University of Rijeka, in cooperation with the University of Rijeka Foundation and Edward Bernays University College, is organising a multi-day workshop titled “Let’s Learn to Communicate Science Successfully”, which will take place from 21 to 23 May 2023 at the Moise Palace on the island of Cres. The workshop is intended for current postgraduate university (doctoral) students of the University of Rijeka.

9th International Conference on Industrial Heritage – Industrial Legacy after 1945

The 9th International Conference on Industrial Heritage will be held at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka, from 19 to 20 May 2023, under the theme “Industrial Legacy after 1945.”

Common Foundations 2022 Held

The 9th meeting of young researchers in the field of civil engineering and related technical sciences, titled Common Foundations 2022, was held from 28 to 30 September at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture in Osijek.

The aim of this gathering is to bring together young scientists from civil engineering faculties participating in the Association of Croatian Civil Engineering Faculties, and to promote civil engineering and related professions. Through mutual cooperation and joint activities, the goal is to strengthen professional and scientific networks and contribute to solving current research challenges. Summer School “Digitalisation in Science and Society”

The Doctoral School of the University of Rijeka, in cooperation with the University of Graz and the University of Ljubljana, is organising the 6th International Doctoral Summer School titled “Digitalisation in Science and Society”, which will take place from 27 to 28 October 2022 at the University of Ljubljana.

For doctoral students from the University of Rijeka, there is no participation fee, and accommodation costs will be covered.

The aim of the summer school is to explore digitalisation in the broadest sense. Topics may include the technical potential of digital technologies, digital research infrastructure, big data research, artificial intelligence, digitalisation in the life sciences, law, education, humanities, the arts and governance, ethical use of digital technologies, their limitations and pitfalls, the impact of digitalisation on people and society, and open science.

Participants are invited to submit abstracts for 20-minute oral presentations. Each submission should include the title, author name(s), a research design and findings abstract (up to 250 words), and a short narrative biography (up to 250 words), all in English. Abstracts should be sent in a Word document by 15 September 2022 to doktorska@uniri.hr.

Workshop: Academic Writing

The Doctoral School of the University of Rijeka, in collaboration with the University of Rijeka Foundation and the Department of Pedagogy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, is organising a workshop for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers titled “Academic Writing”. The workshop will take place from 2 to 4 October 2022 at the University of Rijeka’s Science and Education Centre, located in Moise Palace on the island of Cres.

The application deadline is Monday, 19 September at 16:00.

Central topics of the workshop include:

  • What is academic writing?
  • Style, language, clarity and organisation of texts
  • Publishing and peer review
  • Responding to criticism and promoting your work

5th Workshops within the Project “Reconnect Science with the Blue Society (Blue-connect)”

The Open Day of the Laboratories at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka was held as part of the “Reconnect Science with the Blue Society (Blue-connect)” project, funded by the European Union under the HORIZON MSCA Researchers’ Night call.

The aim of the workshops was to bring science closer to children and young people in an engaging and interactive way. Activities were carried out by five laboratories and numerous faculty members. In addition to short popular lectures, participants had the opportunity to actively take part in testing procedures, producing concrete elements, and testing concrete structures. They also engaged in simulations of rainfall-induced landslides and coastal flooding, both under current conditions and with projected sea-level rise.

Participants learned about the water cycle in nature and about porous asphalt as an environmentally friendly material in road construction. The educational activities were attended by primary school pupils and even some preschoolers. Organised visits included school classes from Trsat Primary School and Vladimir Gortan Primary School, a group from a mathematics camp, and many children who came individually with their parents.

The goal of the event was to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability in civil engineering in the context of climate change and environmental protection, as well as to spark interest in civil engineering and its many branches. Children showed great enthusiasm and curiosity about science and research, and many expressed interest in attending the main European Researchers’ Night event at Exportdrvo.


6th My First Conference, 2022

The 6th international doctoral congress My First Conference 2022 was held on 22 September 2022 at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka, organised in cooperation with the Faculty of Maritime Studies, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka.

The conference was intended for doctoral students as well as master’s students, offering an opportunity to present ongoing research and build new connections within similar or related professional environments. 2nd Workshop ModLandRemSS

The Department of Geotechnics at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka, is organising a one-day workshop focused on small-scale physical modelling under 1g conditions. The second and final workshop is being held as part of the ongoing research project funded by the Croatian Science Foundation, titled Physical Modelling of Landslide Remediation Constructions Behaviour under Static and Seismic Actions (ModLandRemSS), project code IP-2018-01-1503.

The workshop will be organised as a hybrid event and will begin at 10:00 AM on 30 August 2022.

International conference “Modern structures of Metal and Wood”

The Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka is a co-organiser of the international conference “Modern Structures of Metal and Wood”, in collaboration with the Odesa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture. On behalf of the Organising Committee, we invite you to participate in the conference, which will take place at the Odesa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture from 9 to 11 June 2022. Online participation will also be available.

The conference will address the following topics:

  • Modern steel structures for civil and industrial buildings and facilities
  • Implementation of innovative construction solutions for the design, installation, and functioning of load-bearing and enclosing structures made of metal, wood, and plastics

5th ReSyLAB, 23–26 March 2022

The 5th Regional Symposium on Landslides in the Adriatic–Balkan Region (ReSyLAB) was held in Rijeka from 23 to 26 March 2022, organised by the Croatian Landslide Group. The event reaffirmed Rijeka’s role as a leading scientific centre for landslide research in the region.

The Croatian Landslide Group, consisting of researchers from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka, and the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, University of Zagreb, has for the third time been recognised as a World Centre of Excellence in Landslide Risk Reduction (WCoE) by the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) for the period 2020–2023.

The group stands out for its long-term active involvement in the International Programme on Landslides (IPL) since 2010, for establishing and coordinating the ICL Adriatic–Balkan Network (ICL ABN) in 2012, conducting advanced scientific research in Croatia, and fostering cooperation between academic institutions and local, regional, and national authorities.


5th Round Table of the PRI-MJER Project

The 5th round table of the project Applied Landslide Research for the Development of Risk Mitigation and Prevention Measures (PRI-MJER) was held on 12 November 2021 at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka. The round table focused on proposed measures for integration into regional spatial plans. The purpose of the discussion was to analyse the necessary measures from the perspective of potential users of the Landslide Susceptibility Map developed for county-level planning.

The 5th edition of My First Conference was held on 23 September 2021, organised by the Faculty of Maritime Studies, Faculty of Civil Engineering, and Faculty of Engineering at the University of Rijeka. The conference is aimed at doctoral students of technical sciences, providing them with an opportunity to present the progress of their research in English and to connect with peers from related fields.

Common Foundations 2021

Lectures Organised by the Scientific Council for Remote Sensing of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts

An online lecture organised by the Scientific Council for Remote Sensing of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts was held on Wednesday, 14 July 2021, presenting the results of the project Vulnerability Analysis of the Coastal Area of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County due to Sea Level Rise. The project is conducted in cooperation between the Public Institution – Spatial Planning Institute of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka. The lecture was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr Igor Ružić, Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka, and Vedrana Petrović, mag. oec. spec., from the Spatial Planning Institute of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.


3rd Round Table of the PRI-MJER Project: “Application of Landslide Susceptibility Maps in Road Infrastructure Management”

The Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka hosted the 3rd round table of the project Applied Landslide Research for the Development of Risk Mitigation and Prevention Measures (PRI-MJER) on Friday, 28 May 2021. The event focused on the use of landslide and rockfall susceptibility maps in the planning and maintenance of road and railway infrastructure.The round table aimed to analyse the needs of potential users of such maps, particularly those involved in transport infrastructure management. The round table invited potential users to engage in a discussion with researchers on the planned use of rockfall susceptibility maps for road and railway sections, as well as hazard maps for rockfall-prone areas, as tools for developing climate change adaptation measures.

My First Conference 2020

My First Conference 2020 was organised exclusively online due to the COVID-19 pandemic and hosted by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Rijeka. The conference was intended for doctoral students and ambitious master’s students wishing to present their research within the broad field of engineering and technology. H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions workshop for young researchers in cultural heritage

The H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions workshop for young researchers in cultural heritage was held as a pre-conference event to the HERItage conference “The Role of Cultural Heritage in Socio-Economic Development and Preservation of Democratic Values – HERItage”, originally planned to take place in Opatija from 11–13 March 2020, but moved to an online format due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The workshop was aimed at doctoral candidates and early-career researchers working in areas related to cultural heritage.

One of the speakers was Asst. Prof. Dr Leo Škec, who presented his work as a recipient of the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship for the project “Modelling mixed-mode rate-dependent delamination in layered structures using geometrically nonlinear beam finite elements”.


Upotreba superračunalnih resursa UNIRI – BURA

To promote the use of the BURA high-performance computing (HPC) resources at the University of Rijeka and to increase utilisation of the shared commercial campus licence for ALTAIR HyperWorks, a presentation and hands-on workshop were held. The event showcased the features of the BURA supercomputer, the software currently installed, and a brief overview of how University of Rijeka researchers can access the system. Encouraging Research Project Applications, Internationalisation, and Scientific Excellence

As part of the Friday scientific-teaching meetings at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka, a programme was organised to promote the application and implementation of research projects, enhance international collaboration, and foster scientific excellence.

The 3rd Summer School of Computational Fluid Dynamics

From 5 to 10 July 2019, the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad hosted the 3rd Summer School of Computational Fluid Dynamics as part of the CEEPUS network “Building Knowledge and Experience Exchange in CFD (CIII-RS-1012-04-1819)”.

The summer school brought together 11 students (including three female students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka), six lecturers (among them Asst. Prof. Dr. Elvis Žic from the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka), and three doctoral assistants from the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad.

The event was co-organised by the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad (with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siniša Bikić as network coordinator) and the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka, a partner institution in the CEEPUS network.

The summer school proved to be highly successful, featuring engaging topics in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and constructive discussions during and after presentations. It provided an excellent opportunity for students and academic staff to familiarise themselves with new methods, research developments, and advancements in CFD.

A preliminary agreement was reached to host the 4th international summer school on the same topic at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka, in two years.

My First Conference 2019

On 12 September 2019, the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka hosted the 3rd Annual Doctoral Conference in Engineering and Technology, which gathered 27 participants. Organised jointly by the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Maritime Studies, and Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Rijeka, My First Conference (MFC) aims to connect doctoral students from related fields, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, improve public speaking skills in English, and provide feedback on ongoing research from fellow doctoral students, experienced researchers, and the interested public.

The MFC 2019 Organising Committee consisted of doctoral students from all three faculties:
Jug Drobac, Tomislav Franković, Marin Grbac, Ivan Hlača, Ivana Pranjić (Faculty of Civil Engineering – GRADRI),
Davor Bolf, Zoran Šverko (Faculty of Engineering – RITEH),
Ivan Panić, and Goran Vižentin (Faculty of Maritime Studies – PFRI).

The invited lecture, titled “Theoretical, Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Fracture Resistance in Adhesive Joints”, was delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Leo Škec.

The presented papers were published in the Book of Abstracts from the conference.

7th Meeting of Young Researchers in Civil Engineering and Related Technical Sciences – “Common Foundations” 2019

Shortly after the MFC event, the 7th edition of the meeting “Common Foundations” was held from 25 to 27 September 2019, bringing together 24 participants—young researchers, doctoral and postdoctoral students—from the fields of civil engineering and related technical sciences. Launched in September 2013 at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy in Split, this annual event was established to connect, support, and promote young researchers working in civil engineering and allied disciplines. Its mission is to foster collaboration, exchange ideas, and build a strong and sustainable network ready to face scientific, professional, and societal challenges of the future. As in previous years, the core of the event consisted of paper presentations, accompanied by a round table discussion titled “Science for the Profession”, guided tours of laboratories at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka, and a group excursion. The invited lecture, “Dynamic Characterisation of Rocking in Ordered Block Systems”, was delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Nina Čeh. Participant papers were presented in 15-minute sessions and published in the Conference Proceedings. The event was organised by the Association of Croatian Civil Engineering Faculties and the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka, with contributions from Laura Žiković, Martina Šopić, Sara Pajalić, Anton Bogdanić, Ksenija Tijanić, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vanja Travaš. Participants were accommodated in the Trsat student residence, and the event concluded with an excursion to Brijuni National Park, where awards were presented for the best presentation and best paper.

SWARM Workshop

One of the key and successfully completed activities of the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka was the organisation of a three-day training session for academic staff from higher education institutions (HEIs) in the Western Balkans, along with a project partner meeting, held from 18 to 20 September 2019. These events took place at the Faculty’s premises as part of the ERASMUS+ KA2 project titled Strengthening of master curricula in water resources management for the Western Balkans HEIs and stakeholders (SWARM), funded under the action Strategic Partnerships for Innovation and Exchange of Good Practices – Capacity Building in the Field of Higher Education.

The programme opened with welcoming remarks by the Dean of the Faculty, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivana Štimac Grandić, and the SWARM Project Coordinator at the Rijeka Faculty, Prof. Dr. Barbara Karleuša. This was followed by a rich three-day schedule of lectures and workshops.

The SWARM project, which began on 15 November 2018, is planned to run for three years and involves 14 project partners, including the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka.

The project’s main objective is to improve education in the field of water resources management in the Western Balkans in line with national and EU policies. Specific goals include enhancing the competencies and skills of staff at Western Balkan HEIs, developing new and innovative master’s programmes in water resources management aligned with Bologna standards and national requirements, establishing and equipping seven state-of-the-art laboratories at Western Balkan HEIs in collaboration with EU and Norwegian partners, and designing and implementing lifelong learning programmes for professionals in the water sector in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive.
